Garamba National Park, attività basenji in Africa

Sono emozionata nel condividere una notizia trovata su FB che mi hanno segnalato! In un parco africano 2 cuccioli di basenji verranno cresciuti ed addestrati per entrare a far parte di una unità cinofila speciale del parco.

Last week we purchased two Basenji puppies from a nearby town to start training to be a part of our canine unit in partnership with Invictus K9 . The Basenji is one of the oldest breeds of domestic dog and originates in the DRC. Known as the ‘barkless dog’, they are also resistant to local diseases such as Trypanosomiasis. As far as we are aware, these will be the first Basenjis to be trialled as part of a canine unit. This innovative approach should prove beneficial for the unit as well as a new skillset for the handlers. They are around 8 weeks old now and undergoing daily training and socialisation – keep an eye on our Stories for more updates on their progress!

La semaine dernière, nous avons acheté deux chiots Basenji dans une ville voisine pour commencer à les former, en partenariat avec @invictusk9 afin qu'ils fassent partie de notre unité canine. Le Basenji est l'une des plus anciennes races de chiens domestiques et est originaire de la RDC. Connu sous le nom de "chien qui n’abboie pas", il est également résistant aux maladies locales telles que la trypanosomiase. A ce qu’on sache, ce seront les premiers Basenjis à être formés pour intégree une unité canine. Cette approche innovante devrait s'avérer bénéfique pour l'unité et offre une nouvelle compétence pour les maîtres-chiens. We are looking at training two local Basenjis as replacements for two dogs that will need to be retired in 18 months. Early development is critical to a successful working dog and this project will allow Jay to teach the handlers a brand new skill set. Personal development of the team members is important for its survival and their futures. Stepping outside the box is how we come up with innovative ways to widen the antipoaching program toolset. @garambanationalpark over the years has demonstrated great strategic planning, especially the development of the men and women here.

These pups have struggled significantly in life already. They have been given a second chance. They ARE skinny but we have washed them and they smell like puppies again! More to come on their first few days of settling in. See the comments for more info on the breed!!!!

Mise à jour de l'unité K9: Nos deux Basenjis ont 8 mois maintenant et ils se sont entraînés dur avec leurs maîtres chiens dévoués. @invictusk9 est actuellement sur place pour évaluer leurs progrès et fournir d'autres outils à l'équipe afin d'améliorer leurs compétences. Les chiens et les maîtres sont très motivés et les progrès sont visibles. Styx est déjà concentré sur la piste tandis que Phoenix est plus facilement distraite par les diverses odeurs de brousse.

Update from the K9 unit: Our two Basenjis are 8 months old now, and they have been training hard with their dedicated handlers. @invictusk9 is currently on site assessing their progress and providing further tools to the team on how to improve their skills. Dogs and handlers are very motivated, and progress is visible. Styx is quite focused on tracking already whilst Phoenix is getting distracted easier by the various bush smells.
